2024 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE Review | Too much of a good thing?
Triumph has updated its 'big' Scrambler 1200 range for 2024 and having already ridden the 1200 X it's now time to test the Big Daddy - the long-travel, off-road optimised XE. I've been interested to ride this for a while now having worked my way up through the Triumph Scrambler range from the 400 X through Scrambler 900 and Scrambler 1200 X. But is this XE too much of a good thing? Time to find out!

    Road my RD350b 1000 miles with no antilock brakes, fuel gage, gear indicator and had to add oil regularly to the oil tank. We dont need all of the excess crap on the new bikes. Learn how many miles you can run on you tank, watch your tach and listen to your motor to know what gear you are in. Have you driven any stick shift car with a gear indicator?

    Good honest review, I think most people would agree the OEM Pirellis are rubbish and the suspension barely adequate.. I would add that the OEM DID chain isn't like a real DID chain and many people complain about the hard saddle (not me). My interceptor has done 43000km from new and it's a very good and reliable bike.. just get decent suspension front and rear, a high quality chain and decent tyres and I don't have much to complain about. Been all over eastern Europe on it most trips being 2500-3500kms.. I trust this bike! P.s. Change the front sprocket to a 16t to have a more relaxing time on motorways .

    How did you feel after that ride or longer rides? My current sports bike is so aggressive with the lean angle that my hands get numb after 15-20 min. I'm looking at getting a cruiser but I do want the sport experience and I saw this bike. So I'm just curious how you do after longer rides?

    • @midlifecrisismotorcyclist
      @midlifecrisismotorcyclist 8 днів тому

      I did a long day on it with a mix of twisty roads and motorway (plus a three-hour motorway trip to return it) and felt fine. The riding position is certainly 'upright' for a sporty bike, while still feeling low enough to feel more aggressive than a naked or tourer. A nice balance, based on my experience. Less aggressive than the Triumph Daytona 660 I also rode recently.

      Certainly A LOT taller than a Rocket, that's for sure. If you're not riding off road and per the vid I'd say the 1200 X is a nicer combination of Scrambler style and more manageable seat height. Makes sense how they put a bigger difference between the X and XE than there was with the previous XC. And you could still dabble in some light off-road with an X - probably would have been fine with the track I did in the vid. Sounds like you need to get down to a Triumph dealer and try a few, which will be a fun day out in itself. Happy hunting!

    Many thanks for your critical and honest review. I'm seriously considering a 1200XE, 400x or Caballero 500 Rally to keep my Bonneville T120 company. May I ask how tall you are? I'm 6ft2" so knowing the reviewer's height helps me put ride height comments into context.

    • @midlifecrisismotorcyclist
      @midlifecrisismotorcyclist 8 днів тому

      I'm a smidge under six foot and reasonably long in the leg so not short, but (as you'll have gathered) that bit of extra ride height over the 1200 X was enough to make it feel rather more intimidating at low speeds. Given you're a bit taller than me I'd wager you'd be more comfortable with it - is definitely a bike suited to bigger riders. Hope that helps!

    As a motorcyclist, I don't think the electric motorcycles are the future. At least, not with the current technologies. I would never buy a vehicle with a short range and pay a bag of money for it. All while accepting the risk of thermal rundown and a catastrophic fire, that will burn my garage and house. And potentially kill me and my family in the process. Motorcycling is about the freedom to go wherever you want. It is not about constantly checking your range and searching for the next charging station. Then wait for many hours for the battery to charge, to give you some meager miles.

    • @midlifecrisismotorcyclist
      @midlifecrisismotorcyclist 14 днів тому

      All about the usage case, isn't it. Won't work for everyone but as the short-range runabout in a fleet or for city dwellers it definitely works.

    I have 70,000m on my 2020 AT Adventure Sports DCT and here are some suggestions from my experience regarding DCT and Ride Modes. Firstly, there are 4 default riding modes; Tour, Urban, Gravel, and Off Road plus 2 customizable “User” modes (User 1 and User 2). Each of these modes presets Power delivery, Engine Braking, ABS settings, and HSTC torque control. All modes can be adjusted for your rider preferences. Your test ride and review was done in User 2 mode using the least aggressive “Power” setting and Full Engine braking. You would find this setting very docile in acceleration and up shifting. You were basically riding it set up like a Rain mode. Try just using the factory default settings in Tour and your riding experience will be much more exciting. Secondly, the Transmission modes are Manual or Automatic. When in Automatic you have choice of D, or Sport. Sport has 3 levels S1, S11, S111. Using D is like an Eco mode and is useless. The transmission upshifts way to early and feels like you are short shifting or lugging. I only use Sport 111. I think you stated it in your review but you can manually shift in any mode at anytime with the paddle/ trigger shifters. It will shift just like a quick shifter with a slipper clutch. The DCT is not an “Automatic “ transmission… it is a “Manual” transmission with an “Auto” shifter. Most negative or unimpressive reviews on the DCT is because the reviewer did not understand how to operate and program the system to maximize the full potential and riding experience. READ the Operators Manual!

    I took a test ride on RM1S at the company base in Coventry and I thoroughly enjoy riding around the A & B roads and dual carriageway. I do believe it is capable of keeping up with traffic and I wasn't as worried about being on the RM1S compared to the limited speed of the original RM1. It's a cracking bike, suspension was a bit firm but apart from that issue I can't wait to take up ownership in the coming weeks

    • @midlifecrisismotorcyclist

      Hi! Not sure where you're getting your figures from but the technical info Triumph gave us on the launch say 320kg for the R and 317 kg for the GT, this being a 'wet' weight with fluids and fuel so ready to ride. Add an average size rider and you're easily at 400kg all-in, potentially closer to 500kg with a pillion and luggage. True, this generation of Rocket is a lot lighter (I think 40kg or so) than the original. But still a big unit!

So, for learning the fundamentals of riding a motorcycle, it seems just the job. If you like the retro vibe it’s a great choice.

    For such a big bike, it's very maneouvarable in cities and at slow speeds and stuff. Totally daily mine as long as weather permits. It throws up at shit tone of dirt, so I try to ride it only when roads are dry and stay that, however, even a wet or damp road will get you covered in grime and dirt in no time. FANTASTIC piece of machinery. Spoiled all other bikes for me! I'll ride mine until the day that I die!

      I’ll ask - at the time of recording Dale was working closely with Jaguar as a development driver and the Ring Taxi driver, so was very close to the team. I’m sure his intel was good on that basis but I’ll see what I can dig up!

    I hate riding cruisers with the feet forward position. Every time you pull away you can't find the pegs ! Also terrible cornering with your feet up front.
